Automatic protection is only useful if it stays yours. Fendr runs in the background without requiring you to engage with it, but every part of it is adjustable and every decision it makes is reviewable.

Online abuse isn't a fixed problem. Your circumstances change, your audience grows, a particular post brings a new audience. You might want protection stricter at some times than others, or to turn it off while you check something, or back on before a post you know will attract hostility. Fendr doesn't lock you into a setting, it adapts when you need it to.

A tool that removes your ability to make decisions isn't protection, it's a different kind of loss of control. Fendr is built on the premise that the person being targeted should be the one in charge of how they're protected.

The abuse you face is targeting your autonomy. The tool you use to handle it should restore it, not trade one form of powerlessness for another.
