How Fendr works

Does my Instagram account need to be a business or creator account?

Yes. Fendr connects through Meta's API, which requires your Instagram to be a professional account, either business or creator. Personal accounts aren't supported by Meta's API for comment moderation. Switching is free and takes a minute in your Instagram settings.

How do I get started?

Sign up at fendrapp.com, it takes a few minutes and no card is required. You'll connect your Instagram through Meta's verified integration, tell Fendr about yourself and the abuse you face, and protection starts automatically from there.

How does Fendr work?

Fendr connects to your Instagram through Meta's verified API integration. When a comment is posted, Fendr evaluates it against your personal protection profile in real time. If it's abusive, it's removed from public view at that point, logged in your dashboard, invisible to your audience. The whole process is automatic, in the background, 24/7.

Does Fendr remove comments in real time?

Yes. Fendr checks comments continuously and removes abusive ones within seconds of them being posted, before your audience sees them, before they can be liked, replied to, or amplified.

What's the difference between Fendr and Instagram's own comment filter?

Instagram's filter moves flagged comments to the end of the section, they're still technically visible, just deprioritised. Fendr removes comments from public view entirely. There's also a difference in intelligence: Instagram works from a generic word list, while Fendr reads comments for meaning, context, tone, and intent, so it catches coded language, dog whistles, sarcasm, and abuse worded carefully enough to slip past any keyword filter. And it's built around you specifically.

What types of hate does Fendr remove?

Because Fendr reads for meaning rather than matching keywords, it removes all types of hate, racial abuse (including slurs, dog whistles, and coded language), antisemitic abuse (including conspiracy tropes), homophobic and transphobic abuse (including coded and politically framed hate), islamophobic abuse, misogynistic and sexist abuse (including appearance-based comments and sexual harassment), threats, and coordinated harassment. Because it's personalised to you, it also catches abuse specific to your identity that a generic system would miss.

Why does Instagram leave hate comments up after I report them?

Platform moderation operates at enormous scale with conservative removal thresholds, 70% of reported hate speech stays up on Instagram after being reported (Appeals Centre Europe, 2026). Fendr doesn't rely on platform moderation; it operates on your behalf, removing abusive comments within seconds, automatically, before your audience sees them.

If I'm collaborating with someone on my Instagram, does Fendr still work?

Fendr protects the account it's connected to, so the account owner needs their own Fendr account. If you're a collaborator on someone else's post, Fendr won't moderate that post unless the owner has Fendr. Equally, your Fendr account covers your account but not a collaborator's.

Your account & privacy

Is my Instagram login safe?

Yes. Fendr connects through Meta's official API, you authorise access through Instagram's own permission flow, the same way you'd authorise any trusted app. You never enter your Instagram password on Fendr's platform. Fendr cannot post on your behalf, access your messages, or change your profile. When you disconnect Fendr, access ends immediately.

Will my club, agency, or employer be able to see my removed comments?

Only if you choose to share them. Your dashboard is yours. If your club or employer set up a Fendr account to protect you, they have organisational oversight, but they cannot see the contents of your individual dashboard unless you explicitly share it. Your Instagram login is always yours and never shared.

Can Fendr post on my Instagram or change my account settings?

No. Fendr's API access is specifically scoped to reading and moderating comments. It cannot post, change your profile, or access your messages or followers.

Is Fendr GDPR compliant?

Yes. Fendr is incorporated in Ireland and operates under Irish law and European data protection regulation (GDPR).

Will using Fendr violate Meta's terms of service?

No. Fendr connects through Meta's official verified API, the same integration framework Meta provides for authorised third-party tools, and operates within Meta's permitted use cases for comment moderation.

What Fendr does and doesn't do

Do the people whose comments are removed know they've been removed?

No. From the commenter's perspective, their comment was posted. They have no indication it was removed from public view.

Can I review comments Fendr has removed?

Yes. Every comment Fendr acts on is logged in your dashboard with full detail, the comment, who posted it, when, why it was caught, and which post it was on. Review it whenever you choose, or never look at it at all.

What if Fendr removes something it shouldn't have?

You can review everything in your dashboard and override any decision. If Fendr removes something you'd rather keep, you can reinstate it. Fendr makes mistakes less often over time as it learns your account, but the override option is always there.

Are removed comments deleted or hidden?

That depends on the setting you choose. Hidden removes the comment from public view but logs it in your dashboard, where you can review and reinstate it. Deleted removes it permanently. Both mean your audience never sees the comment; the difference is whether you keep the option to recover it.

Can I customise what Fendr removes?

Yes. When you set up Fendr, you tell it who you are and the abuse you face, which shapes what it looks for. You can adjust your settings over time, and anything Fendr removes that you'd rather keep can be reinstated.

How does Fendr learn and improve over time?

As you review comments, reinstating things Fendr removed, or confirming its decisions, Fendr learns from those choices. The more you use it, the more accurately it reflects exactly what you want removed.

Can I pause Fendr?

Fendr has three modes: Delete, Hidden, and Manual Review. To pause automatic action, switch to Manual Review, Fendr keeps running and logging every comment, sorting positive from negative, but takes no action on your behalf. You review and action comments yourself, and if a pile-on happens you can mass-action a batch quickly. Switch back to automatic and Fendr picks up where it left off.

Do I need a large following for Fendr to be useful?

No. Fendr is useful for anyone who receives abusive comments, regardless of follower count. A smaller account facing targeted hate from a specific community benefits just as much as a large account dealing with high volume.
